Over the Toilet Storage Cabinets

Updated on July 5, 2017

Over the Commode Storage Creates Space for Small Bathrooms

Do you have one of those bathrooms that doesn't quite have enough space? It might be the kids bathroom, or a half bath stuck under the stairs somewhere; a space with not enough space except for the lonely basin and commode. There is nowhere to put spare toilet paper, hand towels, smelly good spray, or even a few items to help share your personality in the bathroom!

Here is your solution to using the space over the toilet in an efficient and cost effective way.

Bathroom Storage Ideas

Many homes have a smaller bathroom that is lacking in storage space, and often these are places that need to store a lot. A traditional linen cabinet won't quite fit. It can be a master bath that's just not as large as we would like, a second or third bath or a bathroom down in the basement. Even something more space efficient like a linen tower may still need more floor space than you have available.

  • One area that is often under utilized, especially in a second bath, is the area over the toilet. Some bathrooms come with a linen cabinet hung on the wall over the toilet. This space is great and easy to use for over the toilet storage.
  • You can make use of this space by installing a wall mounted linen cabinet over the toilet, but that is a lot of work and expense. You can also install simple shelves in this space as well, but while open shelves may be functional and relatively easy to install, they may be too heavy and not fit the smallness or lightness of the room as well.
  • A freestanding storage unit that straddles the toilet is often a choice. While costing more than simple shelves, they come in wide range of styles, from simple chrome units with open shelves, to French Country style with the traditional hardwood finishes and doors to hide the shelf contents and add to the décor of the room. Almost any type of decorative theme can be matched with the choices available for over toilet storage.

Small bathrooms can be a storage challenge, but by thinking creatively you can find space using over the toilet storage where none was before.

College Dorm Storage Solutions

College dorms are a place where it's always hard to find enough storage, and the need for college dorm storage will vary a lot from one college to another. While many dorms have a large shared bathroom facility, the trend these days is to create shared bathroom spaces in a smaller setting, like suite rooms or small dorm apartments, where you typically have 4 occupants sharing one or two bathrooms. This can be a challenge, especially with girls. To make the best use of this space, a free standing over the toilet storage rack or stand like a Spacesaver can be a much appreciated addition, as this space is often otherwise unused and is often quite a bit of space, sometimes three shelves of storage. It can be a clean chrome metal open look or a more traditional cabinet style.

"Today, the degradation of the inner life is symbolized by the fact that the only place sacred from interruption is the private toilet."

Lewis Mumford

My Escape - the Bathroom

We were blessed with a very large master bathroom in our house. Seriously, it could be a bedroom! After staying in a historical bed and breakfast on Cape Cod several years ago, I came home and updated our bedroom and bathroom to the colors and décor of the room we stayed in.

My bedroom and bathroom are my escape rooms; I can feel myself calm down as soon as I enter with that purpose. With that thought, I have chosen to decorate both rooms with the things I love and that includes items on the over the toilet cabinet. You can use this space for necessary or unnecessary items, or a combination of both.

Just make it yours.

On Toilet Paper...

Choosing the Best Brand

We had a basic plumbing problem, just a clogged up toilet drain from too much paper. The plumber asked what type of toilet paper we were using and I told him Charmin. He told me it was the worse paper for causing clogged up pipes. He recommended we switch to Cottonelle and we haven't had a problem since. Just passing the info along.
